We’re doing a deep dive into the award-winning Palisades Hospitality Group this week, and today, we’re learning from Christine Moriarty, their Vice President of Brand and Marketing. In my conversations with Christine over the past month, what stood out to me was the power of people and places in shaping our lives and careers in hospitality. And that's what she's sharing today, from lessons in New York working with people like Vera Manoukian at Starwood to her work in Bali to how she thinks about hospitality today as a leader here in Northern California. From her reflections on the power of mentorship to what makes a career in hospitality so exciting, there's a lot here, so let's get into it….

Mentors Guide, Places Grow

Christine Morairty

Today, we’re learning from Christine Morairty, VP of Brand + Marketing at Palisades Hospitality Group.

Big Idea: Your hospitality career trajectory is heavily influenced by the mentors in your life and the places you choose. Career-defining moves can come from being open to unexpected opportunities.

Why it matters: The hospitality industry offers unique opportunities to learn from seasoned leaders and gain perspective by working in diverse environments. These relationships and locations can open doors that traditional career planning might miss.

Tell me more: Moriarty credits her success to key mentors at different stages:

  • A managing director who encouraged “job shadowing” and exploring different departments

  • A global brand leader who gave constructive feedback after an interview that didn’t lead to the job she wanted

  • Leaders who demonstrated consistent respect for all team members

Between the lines: Sometimes career growth comes from taking unexpected paths. For Moriarty, losing out on a role she wanted in NYC led to a director role in Bali, significantly expanding her skill set.

Key lessons:

  • Be open to constructive feedback - it can reveal blind spots and new opportunities.

  • Don't fixate on a single career path; lateral moves can sometimes lead to bigger opportunities.
