While I was away last week on my annual vacation, the person who first showed me what excellence in service looks like - Micah Solomon - joined us on the podcast to share his latest thoughts and observations on how to stand out today. I highly recommend you check out the series here if you missed it.

This week, I’m thrilled to have Jennifer Krapp, head of restaurant operations at the award-winning Indigo Road Hospitality Group, joining us. She had a powerful episode yesterday in which she shared her journey and practical insights on beating burnout for sustainable success as a hospitality leader, and today, she shares what she’s learned about mentorship. Read on for more…

My goal with these emails is to give you insights for action in less than 60 seconds, so I will try to make these intros shorter moving forward! 😅

The Art of Hospitality Mentorship

Jennifer Krapp

Today, we're learning from Jennifer Krapp, head of restaurant operations at The Indigo Road Hospitality Group.

The big idea: Hospitality can’t be taught virtually through online education—you have to learn it by watching people who operate with excellence.

Being with someone affects them so much more. It means more because you're taking the time out of your busy schedule to spend time with them.

Why this matters: To cut costs and scale quickly, moving training to digital formats is tempting. However, prioritizing this over in-person learning and mentorship will not cause your organization to stand out and succeed. (This is something Anthony Melchiorri also told me on what it will take to win today.)

Put this insight into action:

  • Prioritize face-to-face conversations over digital communication today, this week, and beyond. Email is easy but not nearly as effective!

  • Allocate more time to interact with the people on your teams to build stronger relationships (including time to visit properties if you work in a central, corporate role).

Question for you: What do you need to change to spend more time (in person) with the people on your teams?
