Are you truly passionate about your work in the hospitality industry? Do you wake up every day excited to make a difference and reach your goals?

Today, Michael Pace, the General Manager of the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, shares his insights on what he calls “passion-driven management” and how it can transform you into a better hospitality leader. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation that will inspire and empower you in your career:

Discover Your Passion Point

We all have that little pilot light inside.

Michael Pace

Like the pilot light on a stove, we all have a burning passion inside us. The key is to identify what truly ignites that flame.

Michael shared his personal journey of discovering his passion for hospitality and how it changed his life. Whether you're just starting out or already in a job, take the time to explore different roles and experiences. Embrace the risks and opportunities that come your way. Find what genuinely makes you happy and excited to go to work every day.

Embrace Continuous Learning

This morning I was reading a magazine before coming to work, and saw a new type of recycling can that looked interesting. So I'm researching it today and see if we could bring it here.

Hospitality is a dynamic industry that thrives on innovation and improvement. Michael emphasized the importance of being a creative thinker and not being afraid to make mistakes. In his experience, being given the freedom to think outside the box and being appreciated for taking risks was a game-changer.

As leaders, we should actively seek ideas and feedback from our teams. Engage in conversations, listen to different perspectives, and be open to learning from others. Remember, growth and self-awareness are lifelong journeys.

Foster a Culture of Collaboration

One of the most valuable lessons Michael shared was the power of conversations. He highlighted the need for leaders to ask questions and truly listen to their teams. By creating an environment where everyone's opinions are valued, you can tap into a wealth of knowledge and ideas.

It's amazing how much you learn from your own teams. I don't think in hotels we do enough of it as leaders. We don't truly ask questions to learn how we can do things better from our staff.

Michael's conversation with a stewarding attendant who suggested a cost-saving measure is a perfect example of how collaboration can lead to innovative solutions. Encourage open dialogue, embrace diverse perspectives, and watch your team thrive.

“Passion-driven management” is not just a buzzword; it's a mindset that can transform your career and the hospitality industry as a whole. Take the time to discover your passion point, embrace creativity, and foster a culture of collaboration. Make this the week you ignite your passion and make a lasting impact through the work you’re doing in hospitality!
