Starwood to Open 28 New Hotels in the US in 2013

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has strong growth plans in 2013, with a total of 28 hotels opening their doors in the US.

This would beat the record of 2012, where the hotel group opened a total of 23 hotels, including 21 conversion.

“North America remains our largest market with 576 hotels and saw more hotels signed in 2012 than any other region in our vast network,” said Simon Turner, President of Global Development. “We have opened over 135 new hotels in North America since the global economic crisis and expect pent up demand and limited new supply to continue to drive our growth in 2013.”

“There are a number of positive trends in the North American hospitality market and we expect more than one-third of Starwood’s hotel openings around the world to be in the U.S. and Canada in 2013,” said Allison Reid, Senior Vice President of North America Development, Starwood. “Our strong brands, global scale and presence, powerful systems and growing base of loyal customers continue to set Starwood apart from our competition. We are seeing increased interest among owners in initiating new hotels with Starwood especially around conversions.”

Middle market Brands

The chain expects strong growth in 2013 with its brands Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft, and Element. Four Points by Sheraton expects to suprass 120 hotels in North America and 190 globally in 2013. 12 new opening in key markets such as Manhattan, San Jose/Silicon Valley, Columbus, Richmond Airport , Kansas City, Charleston, Louisville and Jacksonville in the United States; and Kelowna, Nisku, Edmunston, Regina in Canada.

Aloft will surpass 50 hotels in North America and 75 globally with an expected portfolio growth of 25% in 2013. New hotels this year will be the Aloft Tucson and Aloft Calgary University. Element will see the opening of Element Vaughan Southeast in Ontario, Canada.

Upper Upscale and Luxury Brands

Le Méridien, Westin and Sheraton will also see sustained expansion in 2013 throughout North America. Le Méridien expects eight new openings globally and Westin is to see four new hotels in the United States, Westin Birmingham, Westin San Jose, Westin Sacramento, and Westin Houston Downtown. Sheraton will open a hotel in the airport of Pittsburgh this year.
