Despite public protest and subscription the historic Café Gijón situated on the main boulevard of Madrid’s Recoletos area, has been sold to the highest bidder. The public’s bid, and that of the owners started at €65,000; it couldn’t match the winning offer of €144,000 by a large company.
Founded in 1888 the watering hole, on a par with any similar on the Left Bank of Paris, was world famous for its patrons.
Apart from great playwrights, poets and essayists, its aficionados included Andalusia poet Federico García Lorca, the American writer Ernest Hemingway and Eva Gardner the Hollywood actress who dominated the silver screen throughout the 140s and 1950s.
