Foursquare and the Hospitality Industry - Are You Using it?

Is the hospitality industry taking full advantage of social media? Or is there only a concentration on Facebook and Twitter use?

Foursquare is a location-based social networking website for mobile devices, such as smartphones that allows users to “check in” at venues and comes with an adventurous ranking for users – each “check-in” awards the user points and sometimes “badges”.

Whether you own a bar, restaurant, hotel or a theme park, Foursquare could give your business an added boost.

The social media platform was created in 2009 and today counts with over 20 million users who “check-in” an average of 3 million times a day.

Apart from “checking-in”, users can leave feedback and reviews on their experience at the venues. With the platform being linked to Twitter and Facebook, the distribution potential is much greater than with most other social media platforms.

With search engines laying more and more value on social media every day, Foursquare may just give your business that extra boost.

Some of the bigger players such as Starwood Hotels and Resorts are already using Foursquare for their SPG – Starwood Preferred Guest — loyalty program. Once a guest links his SPG and Foursquare accounts, he can earn 250 Starpoints when he checks in to a Starwood hotel with a confirmed reservation.

With a recent update to their privacy policy, Foursquare has given the site new direction and a clear benefit to hospitality businesses (1. Foursquare will now display full names.  2. A business on Foursquare will be able to see more of its recent customers).

So is it right for your pub, nightclub, hotel or casino? Give it a try and find out. If you’ve used Foursquare in connection with your hospitality business, we’d love to hear your feedback.
